A young constable faces prejudice in a small country town, but the search for a missing child changes everything. A breathtaking novel of rural suspense from the bestselling Voice of the Outback.

Mia, a newly graduated constable, is assigned to the small country town of Broad River. And as certain as she is about her ability to do the job, on day one she’s already in conflict with colleagues who believe that women shouldn’t be coppers.

It takes the shine off coming home, where her grandmother, Clara, is in the early stages of dementia. Mia is accustomed to their conversations often not quite making sense, but when Clara gives Mia a mysterious key and hints of veiled family secrets, Mia isn’t sure what she should believe.

In the midst of all this, a local child goes missing and Mia is confined to barracks. When Detective Dave Burrows realises she has skills that could be put to use, Mia’s career takes a new turn, and she must decide down which road to walk.

Author Fleur McDonald is known as the voice of the outback and this amazing storyteller published her pinnacle twentieth novel in November 2022. This is a fantastic achievement for such a highly embraced Australian author. McDonald’s landmark twentieth release is Broad River Station. A tale of small-town conflicts, homecoming, family secrets and career challenges, the envoy of rural fiction has it covered. It was great to be in the company of familiar detective Dave Burrows and his new constable sidekick Mia Worth in Broad River Station.

Broad River Station is another thrilling rural fiction tale that features popular Detective Dave Burrows and a new character, a graduate officer named Mia Worth. Assigned to Broad River, Mia is confident about her new position, but she quickly comes out of favour when she encounters sexism in the workplace. Mia is back in her old stomping ground, not only to take up a position at the local police station, but to watch over her grandmother who is suffering from dementia. During one of Mia’s regular visits to her grandmother, she is startled to receive a rather cryptic message from Clara. Clara reveals that she is in possession of a key that will unlock a hidden truth about their family. Mia has her doubts about her grandmother’s revelation, especially as Clara’s mind is faltering. Mia’s new posting soon involves a missing child, which rocks the small community base.  Mia has a lot to prove and thanks seasoned Detective Dave Burrows, she might just get the big break she is after.

For her celebratory twentieth release, popular Aussie author Fleur McDonald brings in a new constable to work with her highly embraced detective, Dave Burrows. In this suspenseful, exciting and topical rural thriller, we are presented with plenty of knife edge tension, small town politics and family issues.

Broad River Station introduces a new and hopefully enduring character to Fleur McDonald’s absorbing rural suspense tales. It was great to be introduced to graduate constable Mia Worth, she was a real breath of fresh air. Highlighting the pressures and roadblocks faced by female police officers, Mia’s story was a fascinating one to follow. McDonald also brings in favourite Detective Dave Burrows, which adds an air of familiarity and ease to the story at hand. With a number of other periphery characters such as local townsfolk, fellow law enforcement officers and loved ones of the lead characters, Broad River Station was a busy read. With themes of workplace politics, small town pressure points, rural crime, missing persons cases, community relations, family health and the past, the voice of the outback has it all covered. The fast-moving plot and consuming chapters that roll one after the other ensured that Broad River Station was a page turning read. I love the touch of crime, mystery and suspense McDonald always incorporates into her rural tales. You can never go wrong with a Fleur McDonald read!

Cheers to Fleur McDonald on her twentieth book, Broad River Station is another ripper from the voice of the bush!
